Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Company (ADNEC) has announced that the Feature Tower to be built next to the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre is to be named 'Capital Gate'.
From 2009, Abu Dhabi will be home to one of the world's great buildings - Capital Gate an iconic and avant-garde building, Capital Gate blends the beauty of the wave with power of technical advancement.
When complete, Capital Gate will be 160 metres and 35 storeys tall and, in addition to the Hyatt at Capital Centre hotel, will provide the most exclusive office space in the UAE capital city.
Capital Gate forms a major part of the Capital Centre development, the AED8 billion business and residential micro city being constructed around the newly opened Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre.
Surpassing even the Leaning Tower of Pisa, which currently leans 3.97 degrees, the 35-story Capital Gate will lean westward 18 degrees, more than four times as far as its competitor. The structure will accommodate the 5-star Hyatt at Capital Center hotel and provide exclusive office space in Abu Dhabi.
The building has been specifically designed to complement the intentional lean. It will have a foundation of a dense mesh of reinforced steel, which will cover 490 piles drilled 30 meters underground and distributed to adapt to gravitational, wind, and seismic pressures. Capital Gate will also include 728 custom-made diamond-shaped glazing panels fitted at slightly different angles to adjust to the curvature of the building.
David Pringle, CEO of RMJM Asia and the Middle East, said, “Capital Gate will be one of a kind. Its graceful, asymmetric, diagonal structure, known as a ‘diagrid’, supports the tilting external load of the building, and we believe that this is the first building in the world to use a pre-cambered core.”
